Curtain of the Chamber of Felicity
When the Mosque of the Prophet was being built, two adjoining chambers were constructed to the south of the east wall. These were used as a house by the Prophet Muhammad. Later more chambers were added, and these are referred to as the "houses of the Prophet" in the Hujuraat Surah.
Since the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) died in the chamber belonging to his wife Aisha, the place where he was buried was known by names the chamber of honour, the holy chamber, the fragrant chamber or the exalted chamber. Encouraged by the hadith, "Visiting me after my death shall be like visiting me in life", every year millions of Muslims visit the Chamber of Felicity, where they perform funeral prayers for Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) in small groups. Later Abu Bakr and Umar were buried in the same place.
Originally thick curtains woven from goat's hair were hung at the doorways of the chambers. From the time of Uthman, covers and door hangings used in the Chamber of Felicity were decorated with precious fabrics and embroidered with inscriptions. These masterpieces of art have survived to the present day.
