A red Roman carnelian intaglio. It is engraved with a sculptor working on a bust.
An intaglio is a small gemstone, usually semi-precious, that has been carved with images or inscriptions on only one face, leaving a hollow impression in the untouched background.
The engraved gems were used for signet or seal rings for imprinting a seal with wax on correspondence or other important documents. Hot wax does not stick to carnelian.
