This hand embroidered piece of leather (22 by 19 cm) was once the front side of an Ottoman period Surre Regiment bag. It is dated 1322 HD (1906 AD) and written in Ottoman Turkish. The text is addressed to His Excellency Meşihatpenahi Semahatlü Tevfik Efendi.
The Surre-i Hümâyûn Regiment or Surre Regiment, was an institution known as Surre Emini in the Ottoman empire. It was a community that brought aid and gifts from Istanbul to Mecca and Medina. The Surre-i Hümayun Regiment was sent off from Istanbul with a ceremony in which these bags were presented by the Sultan, or is representative, to the leaders of the endeavor.
